5 Books to Read in a Snow Storm

Technically, you could read these anytime, but if you live in the Midwest, you may be looking for an indoor activity this week. Lord knows, we probably will be. So, without further ado, here are five books I’ve read over the last few months (and liked).

Molly’s Game by Molly Bloom – Molly’s Game was one of my favorites from this list. I am not typically that into memoirs, but Keegan picked this up for me, since I loved the movie so much (It was also great.)

Molly’s Game is about a former world-class skier, who – by chance and incredible street smarts – ran the most exclusive poker game in the United States. It was fascinating and juicy. While reading it, I spent a good portion of my time googling the names in the book. Some I didn’t need to google. (Leo DiCaprio, A-Rod and Ben Affleck all make appearances).

A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness – We read this one for my book club, and I really enjoyed it and plan to read the other two in the trilogy. This book is about a witch who denies her powers, but begins to come into her own on accident and through the help of a vampire. I know. It’s a magical book. Don’t judge.

My only complaint was that I felt like it could have been shorter and edited down a bit. I didn’t need to know that much about Matthew’s wine collection.

Vox by Christina Dalcher – Another book club pick, this one is probably my favorite of the group. The story takes place in present-ish time when a dictator has taken over. One of his laws states women are only allowed a certain number of words a day. Every female is forced to wear a word counter on their wrist, or they face horrific consequences. Yep.

Vox is infuriating and frightening, because the author does a great job of showing how these restrictions happen slowly and often, before it’s too late to stop them.

I read it in a few days, desperate to see how the main character would free herself from the dystopian America she was living in. The only criticism I heard from our group was that it was VERY similar to The Handmaid’s Tale. I haven’t read or watched that one, so it wasn’t an issue for me.

A Simple Favor by Darcey Bell – Have you seen the movie? The book ends completely differently, which is nuts. This was a quick read for me with lots of twists and turns. It was a little disturbing, but held my interest the entire time. Overall, I’d recommend it, but didn’t love it as much as The Woman in the Window, which made me gasp out loud.

The Favorite Sister by Jessica Knoll – A dishy read, The Favorite Sister follows the cast of a reality show before and after the death of one of its stars. I really liked how the author switches perspective to give us a glimpse of how things are perceived versus the reality of each lady’s relationship with one another, as well as their real identity. As the book progresses, you begin to see all the lies each of the women have told. A long-time Housewives fan, this one felt like a window into some of my favorite shows.

Next up is Educated. Have you read it or any of these? What did you think?
