Admittedly, I am not a big cocktail person. In college, I drank mostly whiskey and cokes, which typically led to lots of dancing and other shenanigans. Since then, I often find myself completely confused by cocktail menus, because I have no idea what I like. After ordering one too many failed drinks while out, I typically choose to have a beer or a glass of wine instead.

However, I’ve always thought it would be very cool to know how to make cocktails. Luckily, the husband also wanted to become a mixologist, so as part of our at home date nights, we have been selecting classic drinks to make. There have been margaritas, sidecars and Manhattans. After only a few months of research, I think I’ve found my drink – the French 75. Made with champagne (sparkling wine in our case), it is light and refreshing. It’s also really easy to make. Give it a try on your next night in.

 Ingredients for One Drink:

  • 1 oz, gin
  • 1/2 oz. fresh lemon juice
  • 1 tsp. sugar
  • 5 ounces chilled Brut champagne (or sparkling wine, I won’t judge)
  • Orange peel spiral (Feel free to leave this out. We did.)

Shake the gin, lemon juice and sugar with ice in a cocktail shaker. Strain. Pour into a flute or other tall glass. Slowly add champagne. Garnish with the orange peel if you have one handy.
