Over the 4th, we took our first family vacation to Omaha, Nebraska. We were looking for a destination that was easy to get to (the drive is around 3 hours from KC) and one that had plenty of kid-friendly activities.
Omaha more than fit the bill.
GO:
Omaha Children’s Museum – This was our first stop when we got into town. Full of kid-friendly exhibits, this museum was designed with fun in mind. One room was filled with different spaces geared for pretend play (a little house, firetruck and grocery store). Another was focused around science-related activities. Levers, pulleys and pressurized tubes sent balls around the room through a series of elaborate tubes. They also had a carousel, lots of indoor playgrounds and stations with art projects. It was a lot of fun, but really busy. I’d recommend hitting it early in the day if possible.
Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo – The hype surrounding this zoo is well deserved. It was easy to get around, and we saw lots of great animals. Some of our favorites were the bear, cat and gorilla exhibits. The aquarium is also a must stop. We went to the zoo up as soon as it opened, and I’d recommend you do the same. They allow you to bring in a cooler, so we packed a bunch of snacks and lots of water, which was definitely the way to go.
EAT:
La Casa Pizza – After our drive on Friday and quick trip to the museum, we were hesitant to take Ellie out to dinner, so we decided to order pizza. I did a quick search and landed on this place. Their pizza’s thin crust is reminiscent of a biscuit or pie crust. It was delicious and like nothing I’d tasted before – definitely an Omaha original.
eCreamery* – This ice cream parlor is a gem. They make all of their unique flavors in house and rotate what’s available in store. While we were there, we tried the Shark Bait (sea salt caramel with chocolate covered pretzels) and the strawberry gelato. My only regret is that we didn’t pick up a pint to go (I was more than a little curious about the smore’s flavor). Luckily, they take orders online.
M’s Pub – Some good friends had recommend this spot before we left. I’m really glad they did. The food is delicious, and it’s an iconic Omaha stop. If I were you, I’d definitely check this place out on your next trip.
STAY:
VRBO – Because we were traveling with Ellie, we stayed at a house available through Vacation Rental by Owner. I’m really happy we went this direction, because we were able to have separate rooms and a space to relax after we put her to bed.
*We heard really good things about Ted & Wally’s, but with a long line out the door and a tired toddler, we decided to check out eCreamery instead. If I could do it again, I’d try to hit up both. This one looks like so much fun.
