Today, Lori Barnes of Born in Heels and I are switching places. An incredibly knowledgeable make-up guru, she knows a thing or two about cosmetics (actually around a million, but who’s counting). So, I thought she’d be the perfect person to ask why our make-up is always falling off. Here she’ll share tips for making sure our makeup doesn’t budge.
You know what I’m talking about… Almost everyday, at approximately 7:00 AM, you start applying your makeup. You sit and admire your handy work for a moment and say to yourself: “Well done, self… You look hot”! Then make your way out the door to Carpe Diem (aka seize the day)!
As the day progresses, the seemingly inevitable happens… Your makeup begins to disappear! All that hard work, just slides right off your face!
What are you doing wrong, you ask? If you answer “no” to any of the following, you have your answer!
1. Are you keeping your hands off your face? I repeat, ladies: HANDS OFF! Not only do your hands harbor bacteria (which can cause breakouts), but every time you touch your face, a little layer of makeup comes off. Sadness…
2. Are you using a good quality primer? This is one of the most important steps in my beauty routine. Primer is the protective layer that lays the foundation for your face!
I’m going to use a food analogy: think of your face as a breaded chicken cutlet… Your skin would be the chicken, your powder or foundation is the flour, and your primer is the egg wash. Without the egg wash, the flour will slide right off the chicken! Savvy?
Here some of my favorite primers:
Too Faced Primed & Poreless Pure
Lumene Bright Now Blur Line & Pore Minimizer
Younique Glorious Face and Eye Primer
3. Have you had a professional consultation about what foundation or powder is the correct formula for your skin type? If you’re using an oil based formula and your skin has oily tendencies, your makeup will melt off your face like a Popsicle on the 4th of July!
4. Do you have a solid skincare routine for both day AND night? Meaning:
A. You wash your face twice a day.
B. You’re using an astringent or rose water to balance your skin and remove dead cells.
C. Using a moisturizer for your SKIN TYPE to either add water (for oily skin) or add back essential oils (for dry skin).
D. Remove ALL makeup before you go to bed. (Fact: your skin cells regenerate overnight while you sleep. If you have your makeup on, all of that dirt, grim, and bacteria is being pulled into your pores. No bueno.)
E. Use a mud mask once or twice a week. It will do wonders!
Why am I talking about all this? Because you can’t have beautiful makeup without beautiful skin. No amount of makeup can cover poor skincare habits. Just sayin…
5. Are you using the correct tools to apply your makeup? I’m talking about brushes, not power tools! Do you own a foundation brush? How about a powder puff? Are you washing them at least once a week? Proper brushes and brush care are just as important as proper skincare. Brushes hold on to dead skin and other bacteria attached to them. Dirty brushes = a dirty face.
I love this brush cleanser from MAC. Just mix it with a little warm water in a glass and let your brushes soak for about 5 minutes, rinse them off, and lay flat to dry on a towel.
