When Keegan and I first moved to Kansas City, I had absolutely no money. So, when Christmas came around, I didn’t have the budget to buy beautiful stockings. I only had the cash to craft ours with cheap stockings, felt and lots of glitter (the cure-all for all crafts gone wrong).

Since that time, I have wanted to upgrade our stockings every year, but Keegan is not on board, because he likes our current ones. I personally think he likes their price. So, after having a baby, it was time to add a stocking for her to the mix. And, for less than $10, I made one. It is my favorite so far.

If you’re looking for an inexpensive way to make stockings, all you’ll need is a felt stocking, sheets of felt, leftover buttons or sequins, glitter, parchment paper, thread, pins, needles and glue.

The first time I made these, I used red stockings, but I couldn’t find a red one anywhere this time. Apparently, these cheap $1 stockings go like hot cakes in red. Instead, I found this pink one and thought it would be pretty cute. I chose red glitter and pink felt, along with silver glitter to jazz it up.

Here’s how to make one for yourself:

1. Use a pen or marker to draw your shape(s). I chose a star and made a variety of sizes. The black marker I had been using bled through, so I had to use a pen on the light pink felt.

2. Cut out the shapes.

3. Place your shapes.

4. When you’re happy with the layout, secure them with straight pins.

5. Turn the stocking inside out and sew the stars on using a simple stitch. I basically made one small stitch in the center of each. Looping and knotting my thread several times until it felt secure. If you’re uncomfortable sewing, then I think you could just hot glue to attach your shapes.

6. Turn the stocking right side out and add buttons, sequins or any other embellishments. You can use hot glue or simply stitch them on.

7. On a piece of parchment or wax paper, use glue to write the person’s name. Now, shake on the glitter until it’s covered.

8. Gently shake the stocking over the paper to remove any excess glitter. Then, let it dry.

Simply, hang and enjoy.
