Fashion Friday: Feelin’ Blue

via Vogue

For his Spring/Summer 2011 show, Mr. Armani did an entire collection in shades of blue. His interesting usage of the color spawned a trend, and soon, you should expect to see cobalt pieces showing up in stores. Some magazines are touting the rise of the lbd (little, blue dress). You may even recognize this dress that Anne Hathaway wore from Armani’s line to a little awards show called the Oscars.   Continue reading

Confession

Hello Upper Eastsiders.

I’ve long been a fan of Gossip Girl. Between the fashion and intrigue, I’ve stayed with the show through its rough patches(and there have been a lot) and in the spirit of full disclosure, will most likely watch it no matter how terrible it gets (Vanessa & Nate?).

So like most 16 year-old girls, I had an opinion about the creation of Dair (Dan & Blair).  At first, I hated the idea of B and Lonely Boy together. It seemed ridiculous. (I sense the irony in that comment.) However, I’m now fully in favor.

If you haven’t caught the Dair or Gossip Girl fever yet, take a look at this glamorous promo. The soapy drama will continue with a prince! (gasp)

Now, all they need to do is make Serena less boy crazy and Nate more interesting.

P.S. While researching this post, I found this cool site with info on touring NYC like an Upper East Sider.

P.P.S. Yes, I said “researching,” and no, I’m not pulling out my encyclopedias or headed to the library for this. I used the term loosely.

Fashion Friday: Bright Handbags

As we discussed here before, brights are in for Spring. One of the easiest ways to try out this trend is by changing your handbag. Below are some options I found online. All of them are under $100. For me, I have a hard time spending a lot of money on a purse that doesn’t feel super classic, so I tried to find some affordable options.

You might also notice I chose a lot of structured, ladylike bags, because personally, I like the contrast of a shocking color with a familiar shape. There are also a lot of clutches featured here, because quite frankly, I’m a sucker for a good clutch. That being said, you could definitely try this trend out with a casual hobo bag or a cute little crossbody number like the orange one shown below.

Cookbook Review: Miss Dahl’s Voluptuous Delights

I’ve been eyeing this cookbook  for a while now. My husband likes to say I stalk my purchases. Instead of impulsively buying something, I like to visit it – often. I’m particularly guilty of this when it comes to cookbooks. Looking them over carefully, reading the recipes and glancing at the pictures, I take my time determining if they’re worthy of coming home with me.

Well, I’m glad this one finally made the cut. It’s organized by seasons, which I love, and the pictures are absolutely beautiful. The author, Sophie Dahl, also has the most charming stories intermingled with the recipes. You see, she was a model before she was a cookbook author and her grandpa is Roald Dahl. Are you charmed yet?

No? Watch this then.

DIY Beauty

In middle school, my friends and I used to do makeovers a lot. I think I believed a sweep of eyeshadow could change your life. There’s a very strong possibility I’d seen too many 80′s movies. Or, we could just blame it on this 90′s one.

Around the time Clueless was out, I remember reading an article in YM or some other teeny magazine with tips on how to make your own scrubs and facial masks. Since then, I’ve always been intrigued by DIY beauty. Unfortunately, my interest has never resulted in me actually crafting my own masks or scrubs. Thankfully, fate stepped in. About a month ago, I was reading an issue of Whole Living that had a great little article on creating your own facial mask using avocados. I dog-eared it and planned to share it with you. Potting Plants

Growing up, my mom always had potted plants on the front porch. Every year, she’d ask for new flowers for Mother’s Day. In the summer, brightly colored petunias and geraniums dressed up our porch and back patio. I’ve continued the tradition with a rotating mix of flowers at my house: pansies in the Spring, petunias/geraniums for Summer and finally, mums in the Fall.

While I’m by no means a master gardener, I do know how to pot plants. If you’ve never done it before, it’s really simple. Continue reading

Strawberry, Almond & Goat Cheese Salad

A week or so ago, I started making this salad. I served it with these potatoes and a rotisserie chicken from the store. No big deal, right? That’s what I thought too.

Fresh, seasonal strawberries are the star of this dish. The tangy balsamic vinegar and goat cheese are a nice complement to the sweetness of the berries. Since making it that night, I’ve had it every day for lunch, and I don’t really like to repeat dishes.  Continue reading

Fashion Friday: My Spring Must-Haves

Each season, I make a list of the items I’d like to pick up while out shopping. Typically, it’s on a sheet of notepad paper shoved into my purse or carried around in my planner. I do this to keep my purchases on track and avoid coming home with a 30th knit dress. It doesn’t always work, but I’m hoping this blog will help keep me focused as I make my way through the stores.

My Spring Must-Haves

  1. Long boyfriend cardi
  2. New leopard closed toe pumps
  3. Studded heels (There’s a specific pair I wanted that are nowhere to be found now.)
  4. Chambray or denim top
  5. Wedges
  6. French-inspired striped tee (Like this one, but less expensive)
  7. Ivory lace top
  8. Swingy printed skirts
  9. Cocktail rings
  10. Tribal necklaces
  11. Tailored black ankle pants
  12. White cotton blazer
  13. Bright handbag, preferably a small crossbody or a clutch
  14. Ladylike dresses
  15. A maxi dress (if I’m not too short)

A Colorful Life

Elle Decor

Interior design has a habit of mirroring fashion trends, and one of the new ways to update your home this season is with bright colors. Sound familiar?

My house is primarily a study in neutrals with the occasional pop of color. For some reason, the idea of incorporating vibrant colors can seem a little intimidating to me, so I’ve gathered a list of resources to use for inspiration/support. Some of the spaces on these sites are absolutely beautiful.

With a healthy case of Spring fever, I’m excited to take on this new trend with yellow, orange and blue pieces. I may even try to pick up some items in the color of the moment, honeysuckleContinue reading
